Calligraphy Helpful Hints Addressing Assembly

 Assembling the Invitations

Does it seem like you need a degree in architecture (or at least in origami) to put your invites together? Nonsense! You can do it in a snap -- here are nine easy steps.

1. Depending on the style of your invite, it will be flat or folded in half or in fourths, with the text on the front of the "booklet," the fold on the left, and all other pages blank.

2. Tuck any enclosures inside, or set them on top of the card.

3. Place all the paperwork in an unsealed inner envelope with the print facing the back so that it's immediately visible upon opening. (Note: A high-end printer will probably place a piece of tissue paper on your invites to prevent smudging. It's your call if it stays in or not.) Leave the inner envelope unsealed.

4. You can forfeit the inner envelope -- and thus steps 3, 5, and 6 -- if you've chosen a low-key invitation and wedding style, or are environmentally conscious (and don't want to waste paper).

5. Handwrite the guests' names on the inner envelopes. The formal way is with titles only: "Mr. and Mrs. Smith" (or "Ms. Jones and Mr. Smith," alphabetically, if a couple has different last names). If your wedding is more casual and intimate, you can use just first names or familiar titles ("Aunt Zoe"). Check out Invitations: Addressing the Invitations for more.

6. Place the inner envelope inside the outer envelope, with the guest's name facing the back.

7. Handwrite guests' full names and mailing address on the outer envelope, or have a calligrapher do it. See [insert link] Invitations: Addressing the Invitations or Calligraphy: The Basics for guidelines. Your stationer will probably have a booklet about titles that will help you with other tricky situations.

8. Go to the post office and have the finished products weighed. For a special touch, opt for some of those "Love" or Raphael angel stamps.

9. Presto! Let the mail do its magic.
